Ko Luana Carroll toku ingoa. I am the Tumuaki/Principal here at Te kura o Haewai/Houghton Valley School. I feel very privileged to work with such wonderful pupils, talented teachers and an amazing and unique environment!

As the principal, I get to work across the school which is one of the most exciting parts of my job. It can also be the most challenging juggling all of the balls at the same time.

As the leader of learning, a key role is to support our students to be the best they can be and to be proud of who they are. It is also about supporting and guiding staff to develop their career pathways.

In my spare time, I love to spend time with friends and whanau and whenever there is a quiet moment to reading a good book.

On behalf of the team here at Houghton Valley School, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all visitors to our website. We trust that you find it to be a useful source of information about our great little school.

Choosing a school for your child is an important process. If you are considering our school as an option, a first step would be to view the Houghton Valley School website. Following that, I encourage you to meet me and have a look around our school so you can see it in action. Please contact me by phone (04 9393318) or email me (principal@houghton.school.nz) to arrange a time to meet.

Our vision is “Caring, Exploring and Inspiring Together, Ka Maanaki, Ka Rapu, Ka whakamanawa tahi ai tātou”.

We have a fantastic team of talented teachers and support staff and supporting them is a priority for me as we strive to have the best programmes possible for all of the students in the school. As a Principal I have an understanding of classroom dynamics and of what works -along with an appreciation of the challenges faced by teachers and children. We take advantage of the varied opportunities available to support the curriculum and for Houghton Valley School; this includes the luxury of an extensive outdoor environment including the nearby south coast. We have the best of both worlds being part of a city but also having expansive grounds that make us feel like we’re in the country. We think it’s important to get outside regularly and our students agree!

Here at Houghton Valley School our curriculum is underpinned by the key competencies and growing the dispositions of our learners to prepare them for the future.

We work hard to deliver class programmes that challenge children and we celebrate achievement. We set high expectations and provide all students the support they need to achieve the best they can.

If you are already a member of our Houghton Valley School community, you’ll know that our parents and whanau do an amazing job supporting what we do here at school. Check out the ‘Home and School’ page for information about the events they lead.

If you require any further information about Houghton Valley School, please do not hesitate to contact me.
