Room 9, Years 5/6
Ko Lara Nemet ahau. I am the Deputy Principal in the Senior School and the Teacher responsible for the Learning Support Students (SENCO). I have been teaching for 23 years and have worked at Houghton Valley School for the last 10 years. I have taught in all year levels and held varying leadership roles.
I am a mother to teenage twins. I have lived in Eastern Suburbs for most of my life and love living by the sea. My family roots are Hungarian, English and Pakeha.
As a leader I am reflective, conscious of changing times and continue to be a life-long learner. I am an excellent communicator, work cooperatively and love to celebrate the success of others. I value the way we all work together at Houghton Valley School to ensure the children have the best possible education.
He aha te mea nui o te ao?
He tangata! He tangata! He tangata!
What is the most important thing in the world?
It is people! It is people! It is people!
I have been teaching at Houghton Valley School (HVS) since 2011. In that time I have taught Years 3, 4, 5 and 6. I am also the Sports Co-Ordinator at HVS and organise school sports and interesting learning activities for the students and teachers
Before I became a teacher in my mid-30s I spent 8 years studying, running, and surfing in the United States while gaining a degree from the University of Hawai’i.
I majored in Kinesiology with minors in Geography and Biology before returning to New Zealand to work in the Insurance Industry. I am married to Hirata and have a wonderful daughter Tamrah who recently attended Houghton Valley School. I love the beach, surfing, surf lifesaving, cooking, and camping.
I believe in fun, freedom and responsibility in the classroom. These can be defined as; having fun while learning in our environment. Freedom to ask questions making good choices, and self-expression; and being responsible for ourselves and our own learning. I am particularly interested in keeping students excited about learning, by trying new approaches and new discovery topics. Engagement and enthusiasm to learn, no matter what we are discovering, is key.
I am usually available before class from 8am until 9am, and after class until approx 4.30pm, depending on the day or if the surf is not pumping. Alternatively don’t hesitate to email me with any queries, or to set up a time to meet with me.
Parents are always invited to help in the classroom. If you have any particular skills you would like to share, then please let me know. We often need parents to help out with transport to sports, cultural and academic events. And by the way, a wee tip – please check your child’s bag for any school notices if you have not heard from us. I look forward to working with you all.
